Add Your First Window Layout

If you haven't done it yet, arrange your browser windows the way you want and open all the tabs (websites) you need. If you have multiple opened tabs required for a window or if you use multiple monitors, don't worry, everything will be saved!

Now you are ready to save your first window layout! Open the extension again and click on the New Snap button. The word "Snap" stands for a snapshot of your browser windows.

Just name your window layout as you like and click on SaveCongratulations! This Snap is now always available to you.

Update an Existing Layout

When you click the New Snap button, if you already have at least one browser layout saved, you’ll be prompted to either save a new Snap or update an existing one. If you choose to update an existing layout, it will be replaced with the current windows and open websites. The name field will be prefilled with the current Snap name, but you can change it if desired (this is optional).

Restore a Layout

Would you like to restore the saved window layout? Nothing's easier! Pick a Snap from the list and simply click on it. That's it!

Viewing Layout Details

If you want to see more information about a layout, just click on the menu icon on the right side of the Snap item and select the  View Details button from the dropdown.

The details panel will show you everything you need to know about the layout, including its name, the date it was created or updated, and who sent it if it was shared with you. You’ll also see how many windows and tabs it contains. Each tab is listed and can be clicked to instantly open the associated URL, making it easy to explore the layout without restoring it right away.

Archiving Layouts

If you click the menu icon on the right side of a Snap item, you will find an Archive button. This will archive the Snap, so it won’t be visible in the layout list by default.

There is a toggle in the extension settings that can make archived items visible again, so you can easily review or restore them when needed.

To unarchive a Snap, simply open the menu of the archived item and select the Unarchive option. This will instantly move the Snap back to the active layout list.

Settings

Customize the extension's behavior to your liking. There are various settings to control how layouts are restored.

You can get a more detailed description for each setting by hovering your cursor over the icon next to its name.

Compatibility Mode

Compatibility mode rearranges multi-screen layouts into a compact grid, making them easier to use on a single monitor. If a shared layout or a stored multi-display layout doesn’t display correctly on your setup, enabling this mode can help, especially when using a different computer with fewer screens. You can enable compatibility mode in the extension settings.

Data Sync

With the Create New Backup button, you can download a backup file that contains all your layouts. This file can be shared, sent to others, moved to a new device, or used as a backup and later imported into the extension.

If you want to export a single layout directly, you can also click the Export option in the Snap item’s dropdown menu, then select the exported layout file during the import process.

The Import Backup or Snap button lets you import a full backup (with all your saved layouts) or a single Snap export. Imported layouts will be added to your current collection. If a layout with the same name already exists, it’ll be updated if the imported version is newer.

The Export Tab List feature allows you to download a list of all your saved tabs across multiple layouts as an HTML file. This is useful for accessing your tabs on devices that do not support browser extensions, such as mobile phones or tablets.

Window Position and State

On Windows, SnapzBack works well with Chrome, restoring windows to their correct position without issues. However, Firefox may still leave a gap on the side of the window, even if the original window was aligned properly or overflowing. On other OS, both Chrome and Firefox may leave a gap when restored. These issues are related to the operating system and the browser's handling of window positioning, and are outside of SnapzBack’s control.

When it comes to minimized windows, SnapzBack successfully restores minimized Chrome windows to their original position and size. However, when restoring minimized Firefox windows, Firefox may alter their position and size, preventing SnapzBack from accurately restoring them. This behavior is specific to how each browser handles minimized windows and is not an issue with SnapzBack itself.

We recommend keeping your browser and OS up to date for potential improvements in window handling.

Incognito Windows

SnapzBack can handle incognito windows just like regular ones, but it’s important to note that the extension must be enabled to run in incognito mode for this to work. To do so, make sure the extension is allowed in your browser’s settings under the "Incognito" or "Private browsing" section.
